Taking a break...

I'm stressed and have too much on my plate. I wish I could keep this up right now, but it is causing me extra stress...just one more thing on my never ending 'to-do' list. I'm trying to cut things out that just take up my time. I'm sure I will come back to this, but right now I need to focus on other things. I'm not going to change what I eat, and I'm always going to count calories. Why does life have to be so difficult? I wish I could take a vacation from work/volunteering/everything. Okay...enough of this pity party! :0)

Let me end on a positive note. I went to the endocrinologist last week...the same one I've been going to since I was, 15? One of the nurse people weighed me at the end of the hall. I used to DREAD this...literally. I hated it. The last time I weighed in there I was 168 pounds and about one month into my weight loss journey/living healthy journey. This time I was 138 pounds. I was really, really happy about this. It was 10:00am, I was fully clothed (with jeans/hoodie), and had taken a shower not too long before my appointment. If I had weighed in at home, first thing in the morning with no clothes I'm guessing I would have been right around 135. I'm not losing and I'm not gaining, which is fine by me. This last 10 pounds or so is SO annoying. I know I need to work out more, and it just isn't my top priority right now. Can I do it? Of course. I'm sure being extremely stressed isn't helping anything.

Moving on....so, I weighed in and the woman took me to a room and checked my blood pressure. When my doctor came in he looked at me and said, "You're thin. You've lost a lot of weight." He proceeded to ask me how I did it, and I told him I changed my eating habits and exercised more. He responded, "Determination? Well, you look great." Yay!! He said I can stop taking my medication, which was to regulate my insulin level. It had been normal since he started me on the medication, but he said that weight loss will control it also, so I don't need to take it anymore. Yay, again!!

Hm...I liked writing this entry. Maybe I will keep blogging, but not just every day with the specifics of what I ate. That is what was tedious and stressing me out!

I went to the gym today. YAY!! I've been worried about my knee, and a bit scared to work out. A few days ago I tried to do Bob's Biggest Loser Yoga DVD and after two minutes I got a sharp pain in my knee and almost collapsed. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I really hope it just gets better on its own. I sincerely hope I didn't do anything horrible to it from just running ONE half-marathon. Anyway, I went to the gym and had a great workout. Spent 30 minutes on the elliptical (which I haven't done in FOREVER) and my knee didn't hurt at all. I was really worried about how much I ate at my 'birthday' lunch, but it turns out I wasn't too hungry the rest of the day, so it worked out. :0)

Weigh-In Results - May 9th, 2011

Weigh-In: 135.6

Hmm...the scale was up, but I don't know if I think this is an actual weight gain. I didn't weigh myself before my half-marathon, or the weekend of, but promised to weigh myself today no matter what. This is unfortunate since it is not a great time of the month. :X I am so happy for the progress I have made, but it is certainly not as fun when you reach the last 10-15 pounds and your body doesn't let the pounds go as freely as it once did. I haven't worked out at all this past week, since my left knee was still hurting from my race. I'm going to hit the gym (or do Ripped in 30) tonight, but take it easy. I don't want to overdo it and make things worse!

Regardless of what the scale says, I was proud of myself when I looked at a photo my friend Priscilla's dad took of us together at the OC Half-Marathon last weekend. I put it next to a photo of us from 10 months earlier and you can definitely see a difference. YAY!

My rescue organization had a board meeting tonight. I did NOT choose the restaurant. Luckily, Marie Callender's recently introduced four dishes that are healthier/fresher options. Not ideal, but it could have been far worse. I wish I had ordered it without this chipotle sauce, or whatever it was, but I just avoided it. I basically took the mahi mahi out of the tacos and ate it by itself with the rice and avocado. Yum.

Today I had to wait at home for the cable guy to come. I didn't have breakfast until after he left around 9:15am. I totally wish I could start every day like this. I wasn't nearly as hungry throughout the day. I usually have breakfast at 7:15am, and I'm hungry again by 10:00am or so. I guess I could try waiting until I get to work to eat breakfast, but that's not practical, especially since we don't even have a toaster in my building.

Now that my half-marathon is over, I am going to really focus on sticking to no more than 1400 calories a day. I really want to lose these last 10 or so pounds before I start training for another race. It is too hard to train and cut back calories at the same time! Not sure what happened today, but I didn't even have a hard time stopping at just under 1300. I think it has something to do with running yesterday. It felt so great to run 13.1 miles, without stopping, and I know my body can only get stronger from here! I also saw a photo from yesterday of me and a friend (who ran the full marathon) and I compared it to a photo I have with her from last year at this time (at another race). Seeing the difference just makes me want to work even harder.

LA Times Festival of Books

When I got to the Festival of Books, and finally found the LA Times Stage, it was about 11:15am and Rainn Wilson was already talking. There were only about 10 people waiting in the "signing" line, so I walked over to a tent, bought his new book, and jumped in line. I waited for maybe 10 minutes. It is awkward to go up to someone and really have nothing to say. I mostly did it because I wanted his autograph. He just kind of stared at me and wrote "Kelly, ?'s, Rainn" in my book. Not sure what that means.

For Jillian's talk, I sat with Linda, Mike and Kayla (Linda's adorable six year-old daughter) about eight rows back. We could have gotten seats closer, but we all felt it was more important to be in the shade. The last thing I wanted to do was melt in the sun for hours to get a good seat, and end up with a sunburn the day before my race. After Jillian spoke, we got in the "signing" line. There were at least 3x as many people waiting to get her autograph as there were for Rainn Wilson. I think we ended up waiting for about 90 minutes, but I wasn't really paying attention. The best part of the day was watching Kayla get picked up by Jillian put on the table so she could get her K-SWISS Tubes signed by JM. Kayla was beyond excited and it was super adorable. :D

Our Student Services team went to lunch today at CPK (minus my two coworkers who are at a conference in Palm Springs). I of course studied the menu before hand. I was the only person that ordered individually. The rest of the group split four different pizzas. I had to turn down offers for a slice three times. Oh, and that bread in front of me on the table? I didn't touch it. I have to give credit to my coworkers though, because only one of them had any of it. I ordered a cup of soup and the Classic Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken. I got the dressing on the side, and only used about 1/4 of the small container (I just dip my fork). I also took off all the croutons and shaved parmesan cheese.

At Native Foods for dinner I ordered one of my new favorites. The Greek Gyro normally comes with peppered seitan, but I got black beans (on the side!) instead. I also asked for the hummus on the side, which I didn't end up using. I really wanted to have the flatbread, so I opted to not eat all of the quinoa. It feels SO good to eat a healthy meal. I was full afterwards, but I had only eaten great stuff. YAY!

I ordered one of the handful of items at Lazy Dog Cafe on the menu that wasn't a gazillion calories. I studied the menu at work before going out with my friends. It was either this dish, or a salad with dressing on the side. I'm going to a work lunch today at California Pizza Kitchen and since I am getting a salad there, I opted for the Bahama Chicken. The menu description: boneless chicken breast, traditional jerk seasonings, island salsa [did not eat], black beans, steamed rice [asked for brown rice], tiki sauce [did not eat/what is tiki sauce?!]. There was hardly any food on my plate compared to my two friends. I also drank 2-3 glasses of water while at dinner, which is A LOT for me. I figured it would help, and it did! We finished dinner around 7:30pm and I didn't feel the need to eat anything after that! :0)

I tend to eat better (i.e. less calories, not quality of food) when I know I am "going out" for a meal. I know there is no way I'm getting out of a restaurant without eating at least 600-700 calories, so I eat less during the day. If I did this on ALL days, maybe I would actually eat closer to 1300 a day! Hmm...

Today was a bit out of the norm because of having a lunch/BBQ with my boyfriend's family. My calories counts are probably a bit high, but I don't want to underestimate anything. Photographic Evidence

Sorry if it is in poor taste to post "Before" and "In Progress" photos of my backside. The photo on the left was randomly taken of me at a work event back in August. The photo on the right was obviously from recently when I was being a dork and having my boyfriend take photos of me in the new Jillian Michaels KSWISS clothing line. I remember first seeing the photo on the left and thinking, "Wow! I'm so small. I actually HAVE lost weight." That was about 13 pounds ago, which doesn't SOUND like much. However, I'm wearing Old Navy Size 8 Sweetheart Jeans on the left and Old Navy Size 4 Sweetheart Jeans on the right. Crazy what a difference a few pounds can make as you get closer to your goal weight. Sometimes I have to force myself to look at current photos of myself. I still tend to feel like I'm bigger and it takes seeing myself in a photo to realize that I'm not. Hopefully as time goes on I will have fewer of those days when I feel "big" and more days when I feel AWESOME. ;0)

Weigh-In Results - April 16th, 2011

Weigh-In: 134.0

That is a loss of 1.6 pounds in two weeks. I am SO happy about this, given how close I am getting to my goal weight. I have been exercising moderately, and eating around 1300-1500 calories a day. I am at a point where eating less than 1300 just is not going to happen. I love my food!

I have been able to see my progress in photos, but since I have been below 140 I am finally not seeing myself as a "bigger" person. The first thing I looked for in a photo of myself used to be how big I was compared to other people in the photo, how my clothes were fitting, etc. It is nice to be okay with any photo I see of myself, with the exception of something like the way my hair looks. This might sound silly, but it is a relief to have people tag photos of me on Facebook, get the notification, and not be worried about how I am going to look.

If I can keep up this progress, which I know I am capable of, I can be in the 120s in a little over a month. Yay!
