I ordered one of the handful of items at Lazy Dog Cafe on the menu that wasn't a gazillion calories. I studied the menu at work before going out with my friends. It was either this dish, or a salad with dressing on the side. I'm going to a work lunch today at California Pizza Kitchen and since I am getting a salad there, I opted for the Bahama Chicken. The menu description: boneless chicken breast, traditional jerk seasonings, island salsa [did not eat], black beans, steamed rice [asked for brown rice], tiki sauce [did not eat/what is tiki sauce?!]. There was hardly any food on my plate compared to my two friends. I also drank 2-3 glasses of water while at dinner, which is A LOT for me. I figured it would help, and it did! We finished dinner around 7:30pm and I didn't feel the need to eat anything after that! :0)

I tend to eat better (i.e. less calories, not quality of food) when I know I am "going out" for a meal. I know there is no way I'm getting out of a restaurant without eating at least 600-700 calories, so I eat less during the day. If I did this on ALL days, maybe I would actually eat closer to 1300 a day! Hmm...

  1. I totally understand how you felt when you compared how much food was on your plate compared to your friends! Sometimes it can be so hard not to give into temptation when "everyone else is doing it!" I need to get better about planning better around eating out so I don't go over my daily calorie allowance!
I'm curious why you didn't eat the salsa! I love salsa, although at restaurants its probably a non-organic tomato sodium bomb, huh? I use salsa at home quite often to add flavor without many calories :)
    And YAYYYY on the water!

  2. The salsa didn't really look like the "salsa" you would imagine. It looked like it had chunks of mango, but I could tell it was in some sort of clear "sauce", for lack of a better word. I just figured since I didn't know what was in it, I would leave it alone. There is this one organic salsa from Trader Joe's that I LOVE. I eat it with my Amy's burritos and Trader Joe's taquitos. :D

I try not to think of it as judging, but it is so hard to look at what they are eating and not think about what is in the food, how it has as many calories as I eat in a day, etc. :(

  3. That "salsa" does sound questionable! Good call!

I completely understand! I think it is okay to make those observations with out actually "judging" because you don't necessarily know how/if your friends are fitting that restaurant food into their diet. I try to be some what optimistic when I see my friends eating "crap." Maybe they had very few calories the rest of the day? Maybe they have eaten clean 80% of the week, and this is their splurge on less high quality food? I try not to be judgemental, but sometimes it is hard!

  4. Exactly! I figured it was safest to leave it on my plate. :)

It has been really interesting eating with people (besides my boyfriend and parents) the last couple days. I remember when I used to just pick whatever sounded best off the menu, with no thought whatsoever to the quality. Yikes.
